Any material to be certified need to undergo a laboratory test. Materials will undergo a set of quality checkups and finally grades will be allocated to them. Similarly polished diamonds will also undergo laboratory test for grading. After the test results, a certificate will be given for the diamond. This certificate will be a surety for the consumers. Today we have many labs available to grade diamonds. Among them most popular are listed below:
Above image is GIA certificate. Every certified diamond will be given a report number to track the diamond. These diamond will also be inscribed with report number which is optional. Its always good to inscribe on the diamond. If there is any problem with diamond, the consumer can bring the diamond back to retailer where the retailer can check and match the report number on certificate and report number on diamond. 1. GIA:
It stands for Gemological Institute of America. GIA is a non profitable private company founded in 1931 based at California in United States. Among the labs available today, most of the diamonds are certified by GIA. Most preferred lab by clients and consumers. This lab undergo interactions with companies to identify and improve gemology by various workshop and visits. How to identify grading:
Block 1: Date of certificate, report number, shape and dimensions
Block 2: Carat, color, clarity and cut
Block 3: Polish, symmetry, fluorescence, inscription number and comments
Block 4: Diamond proportions and its cross sectional image
Block 5: Clarity characteristics with diagram. It shows location and type of inclusions from top and bottom view
Block 6: Color, clarity and cut scales
AGS:
It stands for American Gem Society founded in 1934. This lab created Ideal cut for round brilliant also known as AGS triple 0
Tiffany:
American laboratory that grades their own diamonds as Tiffany and non tiffany. Well known for yellow diamonds. Most liked diamonds through out the world.
HRD:
It stands for Hoge Raad voor Diamant. This lab is well known in Europe. This lab is known to be more strict than GIA. Few clients send selected diamonds to HRD
IGI:
It stands for International Gemological Institute based in Belgium. Mostly know for quick and low cost lab. Their grading has been inconsistent.
FM:
It stands for Forever mark, subsidiary of DeBeers Group that sells 35% of the rough diamonds in the world. Fastest growing lab which certifies beautiful diamonds.
Note: Not all the diamonds are certified. Especially low quality diamonds which have a minor profit margin will be sold to the consumer without certificate. Keep in mind certificate also cost every diamond differently.
