Polisher deals with the rough diamond. Follow planners' pen marking to polish and return back to the planner/ section monitor/ section supervisor.
This task is performed because of following reasons:
- Surface of the diamond is frosted or coated
- Inclusions are clearly visible though the surface is clear
- Understand depth of inclusions
- To confirm inclusion type or nature
- To confirm the clarity
Responsibilities:
- Check every parcel have diamond when receiving parcels from stock controller
- Check weight of diamond in weighing scale and confirm if it matches with the current weight mentioned in the parcel
- Be sure that you fully understand pen marking by the planners
- Consumables, tools and equipment are available and in good condition
- Opening the scaif should be done just before shift end so that you are ready for tomorrow
- Cover your scaif and oil your tang when going for weekend or holidays
- Ensure your polishing mill is clean and tidy before knocking off for the day
- Scaif have to be balanced using scaif balancing morgana if it is available in the factory
- After planner/ section monitor/ section supervisor confirmation check current weight using weighing scale and write it in the parcel
Consumables, tools and equipment:
- 0.5 Marker pen
- Permanent marker (preferred 0.5)
- Table tang with claws
- Galvanised rough Scaif
- Pots in all sizes you polish
- Pot holder to store pots on table
- Olive oil, rose dip liquid, diamond dust or anything similar to apply and coated diamond to open scaif
- 10X or more magnifier loupe
- Apron or dust coat
- Regular pen and book to note down any instruction from monitor or supervisor
- Cloth for cleaning
How to polish windows:
The planner will mark points on the diamond using 0.5 marker where windows need to be polished. Planner can mark as many points as possible on the diamond to see inclusions through the skin after polish. The diamond is in rough stages when the window polisher receive for polishing. The polisher will receive the diamond from stock controller and will have look at all points marked by the planner. Then will select the tang and pot accordingly and will ensure that they are in good condition. Follow as the video below for easy understanding on how to window polish the diamond.Time frames(seconds) explanation:
0.03-0.05:
Using 0.5 marker, 4 windows were marked on the diamond. These windows are marked by the planners through which they want to see the inclusions inside the diamond.
0.06-0.09
Fancy pot of appropriate size is selected for the diamond. Now the diamond is inserted in a way that 1 of the 4 windows is facing exactly opposite(facing opposite to pot) and out of the pot.
0.10-0.20
Claw tang is used to polish windows and table facet of diamond. Pot with diamond is inserted on the screw and claws to hold the diamond. Claws on the diamond and pot on the screw will ensure that the pot and the diamond are held firmly without any movement. Any movement of diamond or pot can cause vibration while polishing and will end up damaging the diamond. In order to hold the diamond firmly do not tighten the claw too much which will also result in piercing the claws on the diamond. This states that claws should neither be tight nor loose in holding the diamond.
0.21-0.26
Scaif is used to polish the diamond when it is put in contact. They are impregnated with diamond powder through out the surface. Scaif used here is 17/10 grade which we call it rough scaif. Meanwhile rub the diamond held in tang on any part of polishing mill. This is most important part of window polishing. You can see which part of the diamond touched on the polishing mill. Now play with the pivots on the tang or may be adjust the diamond accordingly so that the marked area only is touched on the polishing mill. Ensure marked area is rubbed on the polishing mill and then the diamond is ready to be checked on scaif.
0.27-0.29
Now gently touch the diamond on running area of scaif and check if it is the area where you want to polish. If it is not, then play with the tang pivots or adjust the stone and again follow the same procedure rubbing on the polishing mill. If the diamond polish on the pen marked area then check if the diamond is running or not running. If it is not running then find the running direction. Only after you find running direction then the diamond is ready for polishing.
0.30-0.47
Move the tang to and fro as shown in the video. You will also observe that the tang is polishing the diamond only in the running area and not smoothing area. Lift tang only in the forward motion because you will have more control on the tang while lifting.
0.48-0.49
After lifting the tang, check the polished area if it is "enough" as per the marking. If its too small then repeat time frame 0.30-0.47. When you see that the window polish is "enough" then smooth the same window in smoothing area to make it much more clear and transparent. Remove the diamond and see through the window. "Enough" here means that the window polished area is big enough and did not go beyond pen marking.
0.50-1.06
Look through the window and check if you can see any inclusions inside the diamond. Animation shows that you can see 6 piques which are white and black of different locations and sizes. You may or may not have inclusions in your diamond. No inclusion diamonds are approximately 5% in the world. So, most probably you will find inclusions in the diamond. Now fix the diamond in the pot with another pen marking area.
1.07-1.30
The new polishing area might require another pot or the same. Repeat time frames 0.10-1.30.
1.30-2.58
Continue doing the same for the rest pen marked areas. Now you have completed all windows marked on the diamond.
Note: Sometimes polishing 1 marked area can fade or vanish other marked areas. This is because of heat generated on the diamond while polishing. In this case do not polish the other marked areas. Instead ask the planners(or whoever marked) to remark it for you.
Tip: In market you can find 0.5 permanent markers. Ask your company to buy them for you so that when you receive the diamond you will mark again on the marked areas using 0.5 permanent marker to prevent from fading or vanishing. This will make life easy for polisher to follow and prevent polishing mistakes
2.59-3.33
Look through all window polished areas. You should be able to see through the diamond and find enough inclusions inside if any. Return the diamond to the planners(or whoever marked) for quality checking. Planner will check if the windows marked by them are sufficient or may mark more because they wanted to see more area inside or for many other reasons.
