Manufacturing terminology

Manufacturing factory use many terminology in the work place. It is very important to understand them.

  1. Break size: The weight of the stone that will drastically increase the value of the diamond. All the break sizes are start of next size range in rapaport. Follow rapaport to understand more about it
  2. Barcode: Unique number for each parcel in the factory to track the status of the diamond
  3. Tight weight: Weight of the diamond which is very difficult to achieve by the production team
  4. Balance or unbalance: Machine or diamond lost its calibration or moved from its position
  5. Client report: Estimations data, abnormal breakage of diamond, any information related to diamonds are sent in an excel report, etc through emails is called client report
  6. Polisher: Employee who polish the diamond on the scaif using various tools
  7. Operator: Employee who use a machine to manufacture diamond
  8. Running area: Outer area of scaif where diamond will be polished faster but low quality
  9. Smoothing area: Inner area of scaif where diamond will be polished slower but high quality
  10. Estimation: Approximate expected polish outcome from rough diamond
  11. Overpolish: Polishing the diamond beyond planned parameter
  12. KPC: Kimberley Process Certificate to ensure the diamonds are conflict free. It is certificate given when the diamonds move between countries
  13. Damage: Unexpected drop in clarity of the diamond due to accident of diamond
  14. Box: Single or bunch of diamond that we buy from miners come in a parcel called Box. They are is transparent and have unique number
  15. Windows: Polish facet on the diamond to see any inclusions inside the diamond. Especially when the diamond is frosted and cannot see what is inside then windows are mandatory to be performed
  16. Plan: Estimating a polish diamond from a rough diamond using relevant tools and equipment. The employee who perform this operation is called Planner

Polisher deals with the rough diamond. Follow planners' pen marking to polish and return back to the planner/ section monitor/ section supervisor.
