Things to know before you buy diamond?

Willing to by a diamond for your lady or yourself or child or friend? Do not know what to consider before buying?

Below is what you should know before you buy for someone.

Topics:

  1. Color
  2. Clarity
  3. Cut
  4. Carat
  5. Fluorescence
  6. Shape

1. Fluorescence:

Diamonds have shade in them called fluorescence. This will act as a wall for the light to enter into the diamond making the diamond hazy and not beautiful. These diamonds are sold at an extra discount

2. Color:

Diamonds are formed in almost any color. Take a name and diamond will have it. They are graded from D-Z alphabet colors where D is the whitest(colorless) and Z is colorful. Diamond price is high if the color is close to D color. Diamonds are graded as fancy colors after Z. Example: Fancy very light, fancy light, fancy color, intense, vivid, dark. These fancy colors are graded any diamond color except white(D-Z) and brown. Lets say we want to grade fancy yellow colors then they are graded as:

  • Fancy very light yellow
  • Fancy light yellow
  • Fancy yellow
  • Fancy intense yellow
  • Fancy vivid yellow
  • Fancy dark yellow
Pink, red, green, etc are graded similarly. These fancy graded stones will have special prices from the retailer

3. Clarity:

Diamonds are formed with carbon and few other elements(nitrogen, boron, etc) along with some air, dust, packed inside it. These packed particles are called inclusions. These inclusions will define the grade of the diamond. In simple words, diamonds clarity grade depends on inclusion location, number of inclusions, inclusion color, inclusion shape and reflection. Grades are as below:
  • IF- Internally flawless
  • VVS1- Very very small included 1
  • VVS2- Very very small included 2
  • VS1- Very small included 1
  • VS2- Very small included 2
  • SI1- Small included 1
  • SI2- Small included 2
  • I1- Included 1
  • I2- Included 2
  • I3- Included 3

IF clarity is the best grade and I3 clarity is the worst grade. This tells us that IF clarity have no inclusions and they are clean whereas I3 have heavy inclusions filled in the diamond. As a consumer, you will definitely love to have the best clarity because they are clean and will help more light pass through so that the diamond can sparkle. IF clarities are expensive and I3 clarities are cheap

4.Cut

Diamonds are crafted by a manufacturing factory in different cuts. These cuts will make the diamond sparkle at its best. Basically enhance the life of the diamond. They are:

  • Excellent
  • Very good
  • Good
  • Fair
  • Poor
Excellent is the best grade and Poor is the worst. Excellent cut will enhance the life in the diamond to the maximum. Excellent cuts are sold at a higher price

5. Carat:

    Diamonds have weight and their units are carat(cts). The bigger the weight- the higher the price. They start from 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, ......., 0.61, 0.62, ........, 0.99, 1.00, 1.01, ........, 1.99, 2.00, 2.01, ......., etc. If the diamond price of 0.37cts is $1670 then similarly 0.38cts is $1700 and 0.39 is $1730. A difference of $30 for every 0.01cts more weight.
Diamonds also have size ranges. Example 0.30 to 0.39 is a size range and 0.40-0.49 is next size range. Lets say diamond weighs 0.40cts and its price will no more be $30 more than 0.39cts. It can be $90 more than 0.39cts because it falls in the next size range. If you observe the price difference between 0.39cts and 0.40cts is $90 for 0.01cts. This is how it works. If the diamond falls in the next size range then the diamond price increases multiple times.
All the above prices are approximate and taking color, clarity, cut and fluorescence common.

6. Shape:

Polished diamonds are planned and manufactured in many shapes. Most popular of them are Princess, Emarald, Radiant, Cushion, Oval, Pear, Marquise and any special shapes. They are decided depending on the diamond color or rough shape or polished diamond value or market demands

Suggestion from my side:

Every diamond will have a certificate graded by GIA or FM labs which are the best laboratories today.

Lab- Gia or Forevermark
Fluorescence- Nome-Faint
Color- G, H, I
Clarity- VS1, VS2, SI1. Do not accept black big inclusions and SI1 cloud
Cut- VG with 4.5 (approx) girdle%, 40.8-41.4 pav angle, 32.5-36.5 crown angle, 53-59% table
Polish- EX
Symmetry- EX
Carat- 0.01cts less than break

Tools and equipment

Crafting of diamond need tools and equipment to polish a rough diamond to a jewelry diamond starting from import into factory to export. Technology has grown enormously in 21st century where you put a sawn (cut) diamond in a machine and get jewelry diamond in few hours. Lets start from the history.      History:      Diamonds were used to cut diamond rubbing against each other. In 15th century, tools were invented and among them Scaif is the best invention by Lodewyk Van Berken. Scaif is a polishing wheel infused with a mixture of olive oil and diamond dust. Diamonds are put in contact to scaif which rotates at 3000rpm. This helps polishing the diamond. The time taken to polish has drastically reduced at higher quality. Polishing tangs have been introduced to hold diamond when you put the diamond in contact to scaif.     TOOLS & EQUIPMENT       1. Window polisher

Polisher deals with the rough diamond. Follow planners' pen marking to polish and return back to the planner/ section monitor/ section supervisor. This task is performed because of following reasons: Surface of the diamond is frosted or coated Inclusions are clearly visible though the surface is clear Understand depth of inclusions To confirm inclusion type or nature To confirm the clarity Responsibilities: Check every parcel have diamond when receiving parcels from stock controller Check weight of diamond in weighing scale and confirm if it matches with the current weight mentioned in the parcel Be sure that you fully understand pen marking by the planners Consumables, tools and equipment are available and in good condition Opening the scaif should be done just before shift end so that you are ready for tomorrow Cover your scaif and oil your tang when going for weekend or holidays Ensure your polishing mill is clean and tidy before knocking off for the day Scaif have to be balance...

Grains

Grains play a vital role in manufacturing diamond in terms production and quality. If the diamonds are not polished in proper direction will impact the time taken to polish it and might lead to damage of diamond none tension What are grains and its basic knowledge:     Grains are arrangement of fibers in a material. Diamonds have grains like any other material.  If you can crack open the knowledge of grains in diamond then you can be highly skilled polisher or planner. Before we understand grains in diamond lets understand grains in wood.      Wood can be cut from any direction where few directions are easy and others are difficult(rarely impossible). It is very easy to cut the wood along the grains and very difficult cutting across grains. So when you are cutting wood using hand saw blade, you will first find the grains and then cut it along. Similarly, we need to know the grains before cutting or polishing the diamond. Below is a 3D image of diamond ...
