Tools and equipment

Crafting of diamond need tools and equipment to polish a rough diamond to a jewelry diamond starting from import into factory to export. Technology has grown enormously in 21st century where you put a sawn (cut) diamond in a machine and get jewelry diamond in few hours. Lets start from the history.      History:      Diamonds were used to cut diamond rubbing against each other. In 15th century, tools were invented and among them Scaif is the best invention by Lodewyk Van Berken. Scaif is a polishing wheel infused with a mixture of olive oil and diamond dust. Diamonds are put in contact to scaif which rotates at 3000rpm. This helps polishing the diamond. The time taken to polish has drastically reduced at higher quality. Polishing tangs have been introduced to hold diamond when you put the diamond in contact to scaif.     TOOLS & EQUIPMENT       1. Rapaport

Every diamond have a price which is independent of each other. Diamonds have various properties that drive the value of it. Most important of them are color, clarity cut, carat and fluorescence. Based on these factors, a tabular form between Shape, carat, color, clarity and cut in terms of number is created which updates every week called Rapaport Diamond Report. This rapaport is a document used to define the value or price of diamond. Before rapaport came into place every retailer had its own price for every diamond and after rapaport came into existence, the variation was reduced and consumers without any fear can buy it at a higher price. History:     Martin Rapaport is the founder of Rapaport report in 1978. Many of the retailers did not accept it because they see lowering the price of diamonds through rapaport and they say it is the wholesale price book and not retail. Consumers used rapaport to buy diamonds whereas retailers did not accept it and finally they had to sell...

Laboratories

Any material to be certified need to undergo a laboratory test. Materials will undergo a set of quality checkups and finally grades will be allocated to them. Similarly polished diamonds will also undergo laboratory test for grading. After the test results, a certificate will be given for the diamond. This certificate will be a surety for the consumers. Today we have many labs available to grade diamonds. Among them most popular are listed below: GIA AGS Tiffany HRD IGI FM       1.  GIA:     It stands for Gemological Institute of America. GIA is a non profitable private company founded in 1931 based at California in United States. Among the labs available today, most of the diamonds are certified by GIA. Most preferred lab by clients and consumers. This lab undergo interactions with companies to identify and improve gemology by various workshop and visits. Graff Lesedi La Rona diamond is the world purest large diamond weighing 302.37cts graded by GIA H...

Grains

Grains play a vital role in manufacturing diamond in terms production and quality. If the diamonds are not polished in proper direction will impact the time taken to polish it and might lead to damage of diamond none tension What are grains and its basic knowledge:     Grains are arrangement of fibers in a material. Diamonds have grains like any other material.  If you can crack open the knowledge of grains in diamond then you can be highly skilled polisher or planner. Before we understand grains in diamond lets understand grains in wood.      Wood can be cut from any direction where few directions are easy and others are difficult(rarely impossible). It is very easy to cut the wood along the grains and very difficult cutting across grains. So when you are cutting wood using hand saw blade, you will first find the grains and then cut it along. Similarly, we need to know the grains before cutting or polishing the diamond. Below is a 3D image of diamond ...

Things to know before you buy diamond?

Willing to by a diamond for your lady or yourself or child or friend? Do not know what to consider before buying? Below is what you should know before you buy for someone. This will act as a wall for the light to enter into the diamond making the diamond hazy and not beautiful. These diamonds are sold at an extra discount To know more about fluorescence-----> Click here 2. Color:     Diamonds are formed in almost any color. Take a name and diamond will have it. They are graded from D-Z alphabet colors where D is the whitest(colorless) and Z is colorful. Diamond price is high if the color is close to D color. Diamonds are graded as fancy colors after Z. Example: Fancy very light, fancy light, fancy color, intense, vivid, dark. These fancy colors are graded any diamond color except white(D-Z) and brow...

Carat

Diamonds have weight and they are measured in terms of carat(cts). Diamonds can also be measured in grams or kilogram but carat is the term used because of the history related to it. History:      All seeds of carob tree weigh the same. Each seed weigh 200 milligram (mg) exactly and they are used as standard to measure the weight of gemstones and pearls because there were no machines in the past. They called each seed weight as a carat which is 200mg and carat term is very widely used for measuring the weight of diamonds.     1cts       = 200mg     5cts       = 1g     100cts   = 20g     3106cts = 621.2g world's largest diamond ever recorded. So now you understand that single diamond do not come in kgs. Carat and its importance:     Among the 4c's of diamond, the value is highly dependent on carat.  The bigger the weight- the higher the price. They start from 0.01, 0.02...

Diamond Basic Knowledge

Diamond is a solid form of the element carbon with its atoms arranged in a crystal structure called diamond cubic. This carbon is a pure carbon. Carbon is not only the chemical element in diamonds but diamonds can also have nitrogen, boron, etc in their bond structure      Diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any natural material, properties that are utilized in major industrial applications such as cutting and polishing tools. People often get confused between hardness and strength. Hardness is resistance to scratching or indentation whereas strength is to withstand force. Diamond is hard but not strong. It is impossible to scratch the diamond with any other substance except diamond which is basically hardness. It is easy to break the diamond with many substances which is basically low strength. Thermal conductivity is a measure of its ability to conduct heat. Due to stiff chemical bonds between light carbon atoms, diamond has an incredibly high t...

Diamond characteristics

Hardest material: Diamond is the hardest known natural material on the Mohs scale. Also on the Vickers scale. Diamond's great hardness relative to other materials has been known since antiquity. Diamond hardness depends on its purity, crystalline perfection and orientation: hardness is higher for flawless, pure crystals oriented to the direction. If the diamond is of low impurity then the diamond hardness is reduced but it is very low. We have wide variety of impurities in diamonds which we will discuss in our further topic CLARITY. Therefore it might be possible to scratch some diamonds with other materials, the hardest diamonds can only be scratched by other diamonds and nanocrystalline diamond aggregates. The hardness of diamond contributes to its suitability as a gemstone. If the diamond have low hardness then it is not good for jewellery because it will be scratched by other substances and will effect its sparkle and life. Because it can only be scratched by other diamonds, it...

Fluorescence

The tendency of glowing soft when subjected to UV light is called Fluorescence. This fluorescence stands as a shade in the diamond and forms an obstacle for light to pass inside the diamond. Around 30% of the world diamonds have fluorescence. The percentage can vary from mine to mine.     At the time of diamond formation, carbon elements have been replaced by different elements like nitrogen, boron, etc which creates a shade of colors and make the diamond look soft.      How to identify fluorescence?     We can identify fluorescence with our naked eye especially if they are blue but it is difficult. Many types of machines are available in the market which will ensure you estimate the right fluorescence and very easy to use. These machines price range from 40 to 350$.     Fluorescence colors?     There are wide varieties of fluorescence colors- blue, yellow, green, white, red, etc. Most common of them is blue.     Fluoresce...
